A proposal for NGO, supporting orphaned girls in KwaZulu Natal located in the area called the “Valley of a Thousand Hills”. The programme consists of a dinning hall, classrooms, library, offices, medical check-up room, hostels for volunteers, and an internal courtyard for events. The design concept was to create a building that has the ability to allow for changing activities.

Itireleng Container Adaption

The client’s brief was to use an existing container to create a healthy and happy environment for children to learn, play and sleep during the day. The site belongs to a cement manufacturing company called PPC, who only allow temporary structures to be erected on their land. The design solution had to use structural elements that are easily adaptable, therefore the proposed solution was to use treated gum poles as the structure cladded with translucent polycarbonate sheets shielding the container from heat and the dusty winds, This facility functions as both a day-care centre and a pre-school.

Commercial Building Design

As a proposed solution to curbing high unemployment amongst the youth in Mamelodi, we proposed  this mixed-use business school building, comprising of a business school, family rehabilitation Centre, housing rental units, student accommodation, single mother’s home-based business school and housing, gallery, orphanage, a community food garden, and an orchard. The purpose of this configuration is to find means of adding value through design to life of the people living in the townships of South Africa.
